Asbestos is a naturally occurring material composed of flexible and stiff fibres. In the past, it was commonly used by the construction industry.

Its danger derives from the ease with which its fibres, which are dangerous to health, are dispersed in the environment.

The use of asbestos was banned in Italy in the 1990s under national and European Community regulations, increasing demand for interventions to solve the problem of its disposal.
